The Silverfish is dark silver in color and approximately a 1/2 inch in length. Its long, lean body is broader in the front and narrows toward the rear which contributes to its fish-like appearance and movement. Silverfish feed on a variety of materials, many of which can be found in your home. They are attracted to carbohydrates, starches and sugars which can be found not only in your kitchen but in the glues on stamps, envelopes and even book bindings.
Inspecting For Silverfish
Silverfish prefer dark, moist environments such as basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. They can also hide in bookcases and closets and around baseboards, wallpaper, windows and door frames.
Damage By Silverfish
Silverfish are not directly harmful to humans, but they can definitely cause their fair share of damage in your home. Silverfish are attracted to the glue in book bindings, wall paper and other paper goods. They are notorious for chewing holes in fabrics and paper to get to the paste, leaving yellowish stains along the way.
